Mosaic Mandalas

If you know me, you know I am a dollar store kindof woman.  I love looking through the dollar areas and seeing fun things to do with the kids.  This week at the dollar store I spotted this Mosaic Kit for the kids.

I didn't necessarily want the to do the kit the way it was intended.  I wanted them to do their own work.  As we sat down to do the art project my kids did not want to draw their own picture first to make the mosaic.  I suggested they do a mandala.  They didn't know what a mandala was and so for this first time I made the background design for them. I  asked them a shape and then put it in the center of the page and continued in this way until the page was filled.

They then worked on making it into a mosaic.

My two year old preferred putting the tiles on herself.

The final projects turned out perfect.

Mine was done not as a mandala and it is hard to tell what I was going for in this artwork.  It is a picture of Prince Edward Island.  This was a really engaging and relaxing activity for all my children and me.  I prefer the Mandalas for it after finishing, but making a scene was fun and I really had to think about how to put the colors together.

  1. We have some of those from the dollar store, but we have used them with the pictures they came with. I love your idea though, the art work looks fantastic!

  2. I will have to make a trip to the dollar store!! Love how the mandalas turned out. They are pretty enough to frame and hang on the wall. :)

  3. Those are great and I can't believe you found them at the dollar store. They are so colorful!

  5. these turned out sooo great! way to think outside of the box!

  6. Love this!! Since we have a lot of flat, craft marbles, I am going to try it with them.

  7. I LOVE the dollar store!!! I just might be addicted (don;t tell my husband) but I seriously enjoying browsing and scoring some great cheap arts/crafts finds! :)

I have been wanting to do this type of craft all summer & now it's just about over and we never got to it! I must do this soon - it turned out great!

  8. Awesome! Reminds me of a mosaic thing we have in the cupboard - I think its time to break it out.

  9. thanks for linking this up to my tip-toe thru tuesday party last week! art therapy is the best!
