Too many books!

Is there such a thing as too many books?  Not really, but when you seem to read the same ones every day yet have 100s of books it can seem that way.  Early this year I came up with a system for reading our books that helps my kids not always pick the same ones and helps me to feel buying more and more books is a good thing.

First I went to Ikea and bought some magazine holders.  You can even make your own out of cereal boxes as I saw recently here and here.  I bought twelve holders for the twelve months of the year, but I was thinking I should get some (or make) for the seasons and the holidays.  I also have so many books I think two for each month may have been better.  I then took all my children's books and sorted them into the months.  I tried to have a few themes going.  Like I put a bunch of books about body  parts in one month, I put books about school in September, I put books about the earth or nature in April.

Now each month we rotate our books.  I have all our children's books in the basement toy room.  It looks like this:
as you can see I have even more books that wouldn't fit into months
Upstairs we have a little reading corner that looks like this:

Each month I rotate the books from our reading nook.  Then my kids have fresh books to read from and I don't feel like we are reading the same books all the time.  It has been a great system.  Sometimes I forget to rotate the books and it is the tenth of the month before they are switched, but it doesn't matter.  What matters is that they see new books all the time and aren't just picking the same one.

  2. I love your idea of rotating them out. We have 5 or so hat the kids pay attention to, the rest don't really get looked at. We may copy your idea :-)

  5. I definitely need to find a better way to organize our books - all over the floor doesn't really work LOL! This is a great idea.

  6. This is so smart, and I am so grateful to you for posting it! My sons have sooo many great books, but every time we organize their bookshelves we find some that have never been cracked open, some that they forgot they had, some old favorites...it's so frustrating to have all these beautiful books for them and see them reading the same 5 over and over and getting bored with them. This is exactly what we need to do! Thank you thank you thank you!!!

Visiting from the It's Playtime hop! I would love it if you stopped by my blog to say hi! :)

  7. We rotate ours too! But your shelves are way more organized! I bought a HUGE container for my November, December and Feburary books and then have tried to theme them in our holders. My hubbie built me a great shelf for displaying our selected books and I can feature about 20 of them at a time. I'd love to know how you edited your photo at the top. I love it!
